WHO: The global new crown epidemic is facing a severe situation again

Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, July 12 (Reporter Nie Xiaoyang and Chen Junxia) The Director-General of the World Health Organization Tan Desai said in Geneva on the 12th that due to the prevalence of mutant new coronaviruses and the imbalance of vaccine supply, the global new crown epidemic is facing a severe situation again.

Tan Desai said at a press conference that day that the delta strain of the mutant new crown virus is sweeping the world at an extremely fast rate, leading to a surge in confirmed cases and deaths of the new crown.

Last week, the number of confirmed cases of new crowns worldwide increased for the fourth consecutive week, and the number of deaths rose again after falling for 10 consecutive weeks.

At present, the delta strain has appeared in at least 104 countries and regions, and it is expected that it will soon become the leading new coronavirus in the world.

Tan Desai said that the rapid spread of the delta strain has resulted in a large number of hospitalizations and deaths, putting great pressure on relevant countries, especially low-income countries with limited medical resources.

At the same time, there is a serious imbalance and unfairness in the global vaccine supply.

Some countries and regions have been vaccinated with booster shots, while others cannot even provide basic protection for health workers and the most vulnerable groups.

Tan Desai expressed concern about the cancellation of public health and social protection measures in some countries.

He believes that these countries should consider the impact of this on health workers and health systems.
