The flood in Älghult in Uppvidinge municipality that occurred last week has caused damage to and in properties for both the municipality and residents.

The deductible for the three municipal properties that were worst damaged is around SEK 140,000 each.

But the municipality currently assesses that the glassworks and the special accommodation Storgården did better than the library.

- The deductible for the library will cost much much more, says Uppvidinge municipality's finance manager Silja Savela.

Re-prioritize the economy

Floods and similar unforeseen events are not something that the municipality budgets for.

The municipality will therefore need to find money through reprioritisations.

- It is clear that it will be a fairly high cost when several properties are damaged at the same time, says Silja Savela.

The municipality takes an inventory

The municipality is now taking an inventory and assessing the extent of the water damage.

But first everything must be decontaminated and dried.

- I have been told that it can take over two months depending on the material in question, says Silja Savela.

The library, which was badly damaged, will not be useful for the start of school this autumn as before.

This is despite the fact that all municipalities have an obligation to offer school students access to libraries.

- The culture and leisure department looks at the issue together with the children and education administration.

Nothing has been resolved at this time.

But there will be a school library in one way or another when the students start school this autumn, says Silja Savela.

Hoping for compensation

The properties of about 50 residents were damaged in the flood.

One of them was 88-year-old Marian Ammentorp's recreation room that had taken in 60 centimeters of water.

SVT spoke to Marian after the flood.

Now she has contacted her insurance company and hopes for compensation.

- But it can take several months before I find out how much money I get from the insurance company, says Marian Ammentorp.
