July 13, 2021: The French Antitrust Authority fined Google 500 million euros ($ 593 million) for failing to offer newspaper publishers fair treatment for disseminating their content on services such as Google News. "This is the highest sanction" ever imposed by the Antitrust Authority for failure to comply with its decision, said the president of the Authority, Isabelle De Silva, announcing the decision to the press.

Google had received indications from the French antitrust about how to negotiate contracts with publishers, offering them adequate compensation for the use of the contents on their services.

The Antitrust Authority also ordered the web giant to "present a remuneration offer" to publishers and press agencies if it does not want to incur further sanctions.

"We are very disappointed with this decision because we have acted in good faith throughout the negotiation period. This fine does not reflect the efforts made, nor the reality of the use of news content on our platform," a spokesperson for Google.
