Yemenis mourned the body of the former Mufti of Yemen, Judge Muhammad bin Ismail Al-Omrani, who died at dawn today, Monday, in the city of Sanaa, at the age of 99.

Al-Amrani is one of the most prominent Yemeni personalities who formed a comprehensive presence, and the most prominent contemporary scholars in the legal and jurisprudence sciences.

Al-Qadi Al-Omrani was born in 1922 in Sana’a from a well-known family, and his mother pushed him to study after his father’s death when he was four years old.

He was included in his scientific and jurisprudence studies to make his name stand out among the most moderate personalities, and to maintain the respect of the followers of the various sects in the country.

The scholars of Yemen describe him as a modern jurist, a verified linguist, a sheikh of judges, and an imam of preachers.

Al-Omrani remained a reference for various segments of society in discussing their issues and giving advice and various fatwas. He was known to people as the Mufti of Yemen, even though he did not officially assume the position.

Al-Qadi Al-Omrani has also taught at the Higher Judicial Institute and Al-Iman University, providing lessons and fatwas in his mosque in Sana’a or through the media since the 1970s.

Sadness overwhelms Yemen with the passing away of our Sheikh, the scholar, the judge Muhammad bin Ismail Al-Omrani, the Mufti of Yemen. He represented a unique school of tolerance and bringing together all sects, and he was keen on collecting the word and rejecting sectarian divisions. We have lost in Yemen a divine scholar and a renewed hardworking.

On the official level, Al-Omrani held a number of official positions, such as heading the Office of Grievances to the President of the Republic, and was appointed to the Committee for the Codification of Islamic Sharia in Parliament in the northern part of Yemen during the pre-unity phase.

He distanced himself from political controversy during the past periods and described himself as neutral, and advised young people in his latest video to be free and to stay away from fanaticism in all its forms.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars mourned him, and stated in a statement that Al-Omrani is considered the most prominent Yemeni scholars and jurists in modern history, and with his passing the Islamic nation lost one of its loyal and virtuous scholars.

A statement by the Yemeni Ministry of Endowments also clarified that the late Sheikh was the undisputed chief scholar of Yemen and their reference when conflicting, pointing to his distinguished scientific contributions in the fields of judiciary, teaching and mosque circles.

On June 25, Al-Omrani was transferred to a hospital in Sana'a, after a health problem, the nature of which was not announced, before leaving the hospital and returning to his home the next day.

His fans believe that the Islamic world lost, with his death, a scholar and a diligent jurist, and Yemen lost its most famous scholars, who became famous and their knowledge spread throughout the world.
