It was in March this year that a train collided with a bus in the middle of the railway crossing between Finlandsvägen and Lillhagsvägen on Hisingen in Gothenburg.

The accident was captured on film by Freddy Persson who was standing at a bus stop nearby, and the dramatic scenes show how the bus is hit by the train at 95 km / h.

Half barriers gave no signal

No one was injured in the accident, but the investigation now presented by the Swedish Transport Administration shows a number of shortcomings in the intersection that made the accident possible, including that the road between the railway intersection and the turning line was too short for the entire bus to fit outside the tracks.

The barriers that are lowered in front of passing trains are so-called half barriers, which means that they only cover one side of the rails.

The bus, which had reached the other side and only covered half the track, therefore did not prevent the barrier from folding down and signaling to the train that it was possible to pass.

Changing the obligation to give way will reduce the risk of more accidents at the railway crossing at Hisingen.

Action package in two phases

The Swedish Transport Administration has now, together with the Traffic Office in the City of Gothenburg, developed a package of measures in two phases, where the initial phase includes that the duty to give way at the intersection is changed so that vehicles passing the railway have free passage.

In the later phase, the boom will also be adjusted, but not until 2023.

- Then we will have a major shutdown of the Bohus line for other measures, so then we can change from half boom to full boom, says Inger Ranheim who is acting regional manager at the Swedish Transport Administration region west.

How big is the risk of an accident like this happening again before the boom is replaced?

- As the duty to give way has now changed, it should not be possible to do it again, says Inger Ranheim.

SVT Nyheter Väst has previously revealed that the bus had a fault that the bus company Keolis knew could lead to a sudden engine stop.
