Seven people were arrested in Romania for the theft of boat engines on the Breton coast for a loss of more than 150,000 euros, we learned from the Rennes prosecutor's office.

A judicial investigation was opened in October 2020 by the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (Jirs) of Rennes for organized gang thefts, concealment of organized gang thefts, participation in a criminal association and aggravated money laundering.

"These engines were then transported to the southwest of Romania, on the banks of the Danube in order to be resold there," said the Rennes prosecutor in a statement.

Suspects aged 25 to 40

On July 7, seven men, aged 25 to 40, were arrested in Craoiva in Romania by the Romanian police and gendarmerie in the presence of investigators from the research section of the Brittany gendarmerie.

"The searches carried out on eight sites in the Calafat sector led to the discovery of many mechanical parts linked to boat engines," adds the prosecution.

Seven people, including three suspected of theft, two carriers and two receivers, were arrested on the spot.

"Five were placed in pre-trial detention by the local judicial institution pending the execution of arrest warrants which will allow their presentation to the examining magistrate in France," the statement said.
