The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubis, and retired Major General Khalifa Haftar, stressed the need to hold the elections on schedule at the end of this year.

This came in a meeting between Kubis and Haftar in the city of Benghazi.

The meeting dealt with the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, the need to expedite the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries, and the completion of securing the coastal road in preparation for its opening, in addition to disbursing the salaries of Haftar's forces by the Government of National Unity.

The head of the Supreme Council of State in Libya, Khaled Al-Mashri, had said that international pressure and the UN mission were being exerted on the council to accept the candidacy of the military in the Libyan elections scheduled for next December.

Al-Mashri added that the House of Representatives and the Electoral Commission have been procrastinating regarding the referendum on the constitution.

Al-Mishri previously spoke - in an interview with Al Jazeera - that some tried to bypass the issue of military and dual nationals not running for the presidency.

He pointed out that some Libyan parties in Geneva tried to tailor an electoral base to the size of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar and Saif al-Islam Gaddafi (son of the late President Muammar Gaddafi).

He added that there are those who refuse to hold a referendum on the constitution, and that this will create problems because it will not end the transitional period. He stressed the importance of holding the elections next December on a clear constitutional basis, and not on personal ones.

In a related context, Al-Mashri said that the presence of the Russian Wagner Company's mercenaries in Libya has doubled since the start of the current road map, contrary to what the map provides for the expulsion of mercenaries and foreign forces.
