On Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog informed his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas of his intention to resume dialogue between the two sides.

This came during a phone call made by Abbas to Herzog, to congratulate him on his inauguration as President of Israel, succeeding Reuven Rivlin.

"I spoke tonight with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and I assured him of my intention to resume and continue dialogue between the Israeli and Palestinian sides, as previous Israeli presidents did," Herzog said in a tweet.

He added that he informed Abbas that he intends to hold an ongoing dialogue with the Palestinian Authority "in the hope of helping advance relations and hope for peace between two peoples living side by side."

The position of head of state in Israel is considered honorary, and political decisions rest with the prime minister.

For its part, the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) reported that President Abbas stressed, in a phone call with Herzog, the need to achieve a comprehensive calm in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Abbas stressed the need to take practical steps on the ground that would create the conditions for achieving a just and comprehensive peace.

And earlier on Sunday, the private Israeli channel (12) published what it said was a list of demands that Abbas intends to present to Washington as a condition for resuming peace negotiations that have been stalled with Israel for more than seven years.
