The signatories of the petition for the protection of the Maye trees from Bernet to Bègles are on the verge of winning their case.

"In order to guarantee the protection of the park and in a spirit of conciliation with the local residents, the mayor of Bègles Clément Rossignol Puech asks the lessor Vilogia to cancel his project to build 17 new homes within this social residence", explains the city in a statement this Thursday.

A meeting is planned in this regard with the lessor.

After the launch of a petition which collected more than 22,000 signatures, the town hall requested the freezing of the project "pending additional guarantees on its ecological component", recalls the town hall.

Discussions took place with a group of inhabitants opposed to the felling of "two ash trees of a few decades maximum on 20 subjects currently present", specifies the city.

A green space instead

“A detailed review of the ecological and water aspect of the project, which dates from 2016, led the mayor of Bègles and his municipal team to ask Vilogia to cancel the project authorized in 2017,” she explains.

A consultation should be launched with the residents of the residence and the social landlord Vilogia to develop a nearby green space.

The mayor recalls that his municipality has one of the highest rates of social housing in the cities of the left bank (28%) and that in one year 231 trees were planted and 1360 m² of green public spaces.
