The older Opel fans will still remember: With the sporty Manta, the Rüsselsheim-based brand with the Blitz has won numerous customers for itself since 1970.

The company produced the sister model of the Ascona until 1988, when it was over.

Soon, however, the Manta is about to be reintroduced in the car market.

As Opel boss Michael Lohscheller announced on Thursday, the car should hit the streets in the middle of the current decade.

As an electric car.

From 2028 onwards, Opel will be “purely electric” in Europe, announced the CEO of the only German subsidiary of the Stellantis Group.

At the same time, the group presented the new brand motto of the Rüsselsheim-based company and its British sister brand Vauxhall: "Green is the New Cool".

From the summer onwards, the only German Stellantis subsidiary will build the DS4 there, "later in the year also the next generation of the Opel Astra".

Both models are also coming onto the market as hybrids in electrified form.

This year, Opel will offer nine electric models.

    The successful Corsa-e

At the "Stellantis EV Day", Lohscheller also spoke of bringing Opel onto the market in China - with all-electric cars.

The Opel boss can refer to the success of the small car Corsa, which is the market leader in its class.

In June the company sold 80 percent more cars of this type than a year ago.

This includes a large part of Corsa-e.

Electrification is an emotionally charged matter for Opel customers, he said.

“We deliver pure emotions with electrification.” The lightning bolt in the company logo is the symbol for this.

Lohscheller also spoke of a long tradition of the brand and referred to the electric GT from 1971. That model was equipped with two DC motors from Bosch.

Georg von Opel drove the car at the Hockenheimring.
