The judicial world, nationally and internationally, has honored this Monday in Madrid the US Supreme Court Justice and symbol of the fight for women's equality

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

, who died last September.

The act of remembrance took place at the inauguration at the Casa de América of the

World Jurist Association

sessions

, which are held in the capital between today and tomorrow as a prelude to the World Law Congress that will take place. in December in Colombia.

Felipe VI has been in charge of presenting the Ruth Bader Ginsburg medals of honor to the eight women jurists awarded the Ginsburg medals for promoting the rule of law and gender equality around the world.

The jury has been chaired by the daughter of the magistrate and herself Professor of Law Jane Ginsburg.

In his speech, he recalled the figure of the "mother, lawyer and myth" who was honored and wished that in the future the words "mother and lawyer are no longer an oxymoron."

She recalled that when she ordered her belongings a few months ago after her death, she found the letter that her mother received in the 1960s from a law firm that had had her in practice, but which informed her that she was not going to hire her.

They claimed the "higher productivity" of other candidates.

The chosen ones were all men.

The list of winners includes a Spanish one, the State attorney

Rosario Silva de Lapuerta

, now vice-president of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The list includes, among others,

Christine Lagarde

, President of the European Central Bank;

to

Luz Ibáñez

, Peruvian and vice president of the International Criminal Court jurist;

and to

Navi Pillay

, the first non-white female member of the Supreme Court of South Africa.

Lagarde has been in charge of delivering the thank you speech.

The medals are for her "an effective way to promote the legacy of a giant" as was the former justice of the US Supreme Court, whom she has defined as a "magnificent agent of change."

In the court that chose the winners, it includes three Spanish names. That of the president of the Wold Jurist Association, the lawyer

Javier Cremades;

the president of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers,

Victoria Ortega

; and the vice president of the Constitutional Court,

Encarnación Roca

.

In her message to the audience, the Spanish magistrate recalled the close friendship between Ginsburg, "progressive and liberal", and also the US Supreme Court Justice

Antonin Scalia

, "conservative and originalist." This affective bond between two magistrates already mythologized is "that it is possible to disagree and maintain personal friendship", a lesson that according to Roca can be applied to relationships between judges, but also to "any other" in life.

For its part, Cremades has highlighted that with the delivery of these medals it seeks to "promote the recognition of women jurists, sometimes very forgotten, and their role in the world of law throughout history, as well as their economic impact. , social and political ". "These are women who, without a doubt, have created value for society, for the world of law and, therefore, for the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law," he added.

The conference continues on Tuesday with the delivery of the 2021 Eisenhower Fellowships, among others to the director of EL MUNDO,

Francisco Rosell

.

Also, posthumously, to the columnist of this newspaper

David Gistau

.

For that second day, an international summit on the rule of law has been convened, which includes different debates with the presence of presidents of supreme and constitutional courts from various countries and international personalities.
