The American company has 37,000 customers and primarily provides small and medium-sized companies with cloud services and software that will ensure that their IT environments maintain high performance and security.

Fred Voccola emphasizes that no more than 60 of the customers have been affected, but adds that the consequences are very serious.

"The federal authorities are very sure of the attack carried out by a criminal hacker network in Russia called Revil, that gang has nothing to do with either the Russian government or the intelligence service," says Fred Voccola.

The attack was carried out one month after the summit

When US President Joe Biden met with Russian President Vladimir Putin recently, Biden demanded that Russia put a stop to Revil and other criminal hacker groups.

The demand was a direct result of several high-profile cyber attacks during the spring and early summer.

Cyber thieves' market

In May, the company Colonial Pipeline, which owns the United States' largest pipelines for refined oil products, was hit.

More than three million barrels of fuel are pumped every day through the company's pipelines and the attack led to, among other things, a shortage of petrol in several cities in the eastern United States.

The company decided, in great anguish, to pay five million dollars to the cyber thieves to gain access to the code required to unlock the computer system.

- It was the most difficult decision I made during my 39 years in the energy sector.

I know how important our pipeline is to the country and I put the country's interests first, said Joseph Blount, head of the Colonial Pipeline, when asked before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security.

A short time later, the world's largest meat producer JBS SA was subjected to a similar attack.

JBS also chose to pay, the cyber thieves came over 11 million dollars in that attack.

The costs increase dramatically

The IT consulting company Parachute has calculated what cyber attacks have cost over the past eight years.

In 2013, the cost to affected companies and authorities was around $ 300 billion, by 2020 the amount had increased to $ 945 billion.

Most of the costs are related to production losses and updating of IT security.
