The health authorities in Germany reported 212 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day.

For comparison: a week ago the value was 219 infections.

The RKI gave the seven-day incidence nationwide as 5.0 (previous day: 5.0; previous week: 5.6).

The highest seven-day incidence during the third corona wave was on April 26, 2021 at 169.3.

After that, the value - apart from a few outliers - fell fairly steadily.

Recently, however, there were signs of a possible trend reversal, which pandemic experts have been warning of for a long time due to the increasing spread of the particularly contagious delta variant.

Saxony-Anhalt still has the lowest incidence with 1.0.

The highest value can be found in Hamburg with 8.7.

There are two districts or urban districts that are over 20 (LK Eichsfeld with 28.0 and SK Offenbach with 22.3).

Well over half of the 401 districts in Germany are below a seven-day incidence of 5. In 40 districts, not a single case was reported in the past week.

Another death

According to the new information, a death was recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were eight dead.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with the Sars-CoV-2 virus rose to 91,031.

The RKI has counted 3,731,124 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher since many infections are not detected.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,629,300.

FDP calls for preparation for the fourth wave

In view of the rapidly spreading delta variant of the corona virus, the FDP parliamentary group calls on the government to act. "The federal government must by no means leave the summer months unused in order to prepare for autumn and a possible fourth wave," said the parliamentary managing director Bettina Stark-Watzinger of the German press agency. "It's not about alarmism, but the scientists' warnings must be taken seriously," she said. It should not happen "that in a few months we will again run after the pandemic development".

Specifically, the FDP politician called on the federal government to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines for booster vaccinations in the autumn.

In the school area, maximum effort must be made to equip all classrooms with air filters.

"Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek has an obligation here."

In addition, guidelines for returning travelers and foreign tourists as well as a regulated procedure for controls must be established as soon as possible.

"The fact that this has not already been done comprehensively is also one of the failings of the federal government."

In the coming weeks it will be decided how Germany will master the challenges in autumn, said Stark-Watzinger. "The grand coalition must therefore not completely immerse itself in the election campaign, but must urgently complete its tasks with a view to combating the pandemic."
