July 04, 2021This was the third day of mobilization since the end of May to demand the resignation of Bolsonaro, who is also facing a parliamentary inquiry into the management of the coronavirus pandemic that has so far cost more than 500,000 deaths in the country of 212 million inhabitants. . There were also sit-ins in the cities of Sao Paulo, Belem, Recife and Maceio. In the first two months of hearings, the parliamentary committee of inquiry focused on the government's delays in ordering vaccine supplies, even as it promoted ineffective drugs like hydroxychloroquine and while Bolsonaro downplayed measures like distancing and use of masks.

The investigation took a sudden turn, however, after a health ministry official, Luis Ricardo Miranda, said he was under "atypical, excessive" pressure to approve the purchase of three million doses of the Covaxin vaccine. Indian manufacture at a much higher cost than other vaccines. Miranda said she personally passed on her suspicions to Bolsonaro and that the president indicated he would raise the matter with the federal police. Apparently he didn't. This led federal prosecutors to announce yesterday that they were investigating whether Bolsonaro had committed a crime by not reporting the alleged fraud.

Bolsonaro, elected in the fall of 2019, rejected all allegations of government corruption, instead brandishing the parliamentary inquiry as a political "antechamber" aimed at forcing him to leave office. The opposition this week filed a "super-impeachment-request" that lists dozens of allegations, some old, some new, against the president.
