The Agrigento Prosecutor's Office (Sicily, southern Italy) has opened an investigation into the attack perpetrated last Wednesday by a Libyan coast guard ship, from which a boat with migrants in the search and rescue area of Malta, local media report.

The inquiries were opened after the brief presented by the NGO Sea-Watch International, which on Thursday alerted on social networks that

members of the organization who were traveling in their Seabird follow-up plane had seen and recorded the attack

.

In the video shared by the NGO, it is observed how the Libyan coast guard boat fires towards the boat and throws objects at the people on board, while dangerously approaching the boat, turning only seconds before contacting it. .

The recordings of Sea-Watch International have been included in the file of the Prosecutor's Office for a possible crime of attempted murder and the testimonies of the survivors, who managed to disembark in Lampedusa, will be added, according to the Avvenire newspaper.

Sea-Watch denounced that

the Libyan coastguard boat is one of those donated by Italy to the African country in 2017

and that "Europe's partners accept the death of people on the move. Shots have been reported many times during violent returns and interceptions" .

"Those who shoot at refugees and try to capsize their boats are not there to save them. The European Union has to end cooperation with the so-called Libyan Coast Guard," criticized the NGO.

Sea-Watch International also claimed that "European states like Malta must regain responsibility for their rescue zone and fulfill their duty to save."
