• MWC Pere Aragonès avoids the reception photo of King Felipe VI at the Mobile World Congress

  • Act Pere Aragonès plants King Felipe VI at the Meeting of the Círculo de Economía

The last visits of

Felipe VI

to Catalonia have recovered the normality that the Royal House and the Government longed for and a few months ago they still saw distant.

The proof is the presence of the Monarch in the community in four acts in just two weeks and without any scenes of tension on the street.

The concentration called by the

Catalan National Assembly

and the

CDRs

on the occasion of the delivery of the

Princess of Girona Foundation Awards

this afternoon has left a very different image from the last edition, less than two years ago also in Barcelona. Around a hundred protesters have gathered near the headquarters of the

CaixaForum

cultural center

, in Montjüic, to protest against the Crown. At noon, a

Mossos d'Esquadra

helicopter was

already flying over the Plaza de España and, a few hours later, a large police force has cordoned off the roads leading to the enclosure.

In the same area there was a larger group than the one that uttered slogans such as "Out with the Bourbons" or "Royal Family, tax evader."

They were the citizens leaving the Covid vaccination point located a few meters away, in a pavilion at Fira de Barcelona.

The protest t-shirts were mixed with those of ACDC and Motörhead that the attendees wore to a concert of tribute bands in Poble Espanyol.

Some of them, surprised at seeing that they had to change their route because of the cuts of the police cordon, looking curiously at

a point of sale of toilet paper with pictures and speeches of Philip VI and King Emeritus

Juan Carlos I

.

Nothing to do with what happened on November 4, 2019 during the first official act of

Princess Leonor

in Catalonia. On that occasion, the gala was held a few days after the

Supreme Court ruling

against the

procés

leaders

, which had triggered a wave of violent demonstrations in the Catalan streets in the second half of October. The regional police had shielded the area, but the protesters blocked the entrances to the Palacio de Congresos on Avenida Diagonal and blocked the passage of some guests. One of them was the businessman and leader of the

PP

municipal group

in the Barcelona City Council,

Josep Bou

, who verbally confronted those who insulted him and shook him for several minutes until he was forced to recoil. "I am as Catalan as you," he recriminated to defend himself against the shouts of "fascist" or "Nazi" that he was receiving. The former president of the Catalan Civil Society

Josep Ramon Bosch

was also another of those harassed that afternoon, which became a kind of

hunt

against the suit and tie.

That night ended with the massive burning of photos of the King and, although the images of burning containers or police charges of the preceding days were not repeated, the tension of the turbulent autumn of 2019 was evident. The tenth edition of the Princess of Girona Awards caused the boycott called by the

CDR

and

Arran

- a youth organization linked to the

CUP

- to be joined by prominent leaders of

Junts per Catalunya

and

Esquerra Republicana

, such as

Míriam Nogueras

,

Gemma Geis

,

Ernest Maragall

or

Joan Josep Nuet

.

Last visits

The ANC and the other organizations that convened the latest acts against the presence of Felipe VI in Catalonia have seen how their protests have punctured. This happened on June 16, on the occasion of the inauguration of the

Annual Meeting of the Círculo de Economía

, to which the Monarch attended accompanied by the President of South Korea,

Moon Jae-In

, on a state visit to Spain.

Attendance was also low last Sunday, when the traditional opening dinner of the

Mobile World Congress was held

in one of the Fira de Barcelona pavilions in Montjuïc, an act in which the Head of State shared a table with the president of the the Generalitat,

Pere Aragonès

, who ten days before had refused to stay for the evening meal on the days of the Círculo to avoid the photo with Don Felipe.

The following day, at the same time that the King attended the official opening of this important technological hall, the Assembly carried out a "surprise action" without much repercussion in the vicinity of the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat fairgrounds that it has hosted until today. the mobile phone congress.

The low intensity of the antimonarchical demonstrations of these two weeks had already had a similar experience four months ago. On March 5, dozens of people attended the call of the ANC and

Òmnium Cutural

against the visit of Felipe VI to the

Seat

factory

in Martorell on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the automobile company, a number of participants that were far from the expectations of the organizers.

However, for those in charge of security protocols, the previous trips of the Head of State to Catalonia had not been so placid. In October 2020, the independence movement received Felipe VI and the President of the Government,

Pedro Sánchez

,

with a human chain of more than one kilometer

, at the closing ceremony of the

Barcelona New Economy Week

. That visit came a few days after, at the request of the Government, the King had not attended the delivery of dispatches to the new judges in Barcelona due to the proximity of the third anniversary of the referendum of October 1 and the imminent ruling of the Supreme Court on the disqualification of the then Catalan president,

Quim Torra

. The Minister of Justice,

Juan Carlos Campo

, justified the decision for "the security" of the Monarch and to "ensure coexistence."

The Executive preferred to avoid scenes of tension such as those that occurred two months earlier, when the Kings visited the Poblet Monastery within the tour organized by the Royal House after the end of the first state of alarm due to the coronavirus.

Felipe VI has closed this new cycle of visits to Catalonia without the periodic noise from Barcelona appearing.

In this edition of the Princess of Girona Foundation Awards, the only ones who encountered obstacles in their path were not wearing suits and ties, but

heavy

t-shirts

.
