The World Bank announced that it boosted its financing for the purchase and distribution of Corona virus vaccines to developing countries, with a value of $8 billion, while the World Health Organization warned of a third wave in Europe after the increase in cases due to the gatherings accompanying the European Championship 2020, and Russia began giving a booster dose to vaccinators.

These funds will be spent on financing the distribution of vaccines, establishing cold chains and training health workers, bringing the total financing provided by the World Bank to 20 billion.

Bank President David Malpass said the actions he announced around vaccine production, deployment and financing will save lives, boost economic recovery, and help ensure that people in developing countries have opportunities to thrive.

In the same context, Strive Masiwa, the US special envoy to the African Union, said today, Thursday, that his country will start sending the first shipment of vaccines against “Covid-19” that it donated to Africa, starting from the beginning of next week.

And the administration of President Joe Biden announced, last month, that it would donate about 500 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine against the Corona virus to the 100 lowest-income countries in the world, and that it would not ask for anything in return for these doses.

During a meeting, John Nkengasong, director of the African Centers for Disease Control, said that Africa lags behind the rest of the world in vaccinating the population, with only 1% receiving the full dose of vaccination.

He added that Africa is seeking to vaccinate the population with about 800 million doses by next December, but it has received only 65 million doses so far.

Europe..a third wave

The World Health Organization said today, Thursday, that the gatherings and crowding in football stadiums during the ongoing European Nations Cup (Euro 2020), as well as the bars of host cities, is the main reason behind the increase in cases of “Covid-19” disease at the level of this continent.

The organization said that the 10-week decline in new infections across the continent has ended, noting that the start of a new wave of the pandemic will be inevitable if football fans and others abandon caution.

And the World Health Organization added that the number of new infections last week increased by 10% due to the mixing of fans in the cities hosting the tournament, travel and the easing of social restrictions.

The increase in new infections comes in light of the spread of the mutated strain "Delta", the most contagious in Europe.

The increase in infections has raised fears that a third wave of the pandemic may start in Europe in the fall, unless people are vaccinated.

Russia..a booster dose

Russia announced the registration of 672 deaths related to the Corona virus today, in the largest confirmed daily death toll since the beginning of the pandemic, amid an increase in cases that the authorities attribute to the Delta dynasty.

On the other hand, the mayor of Moscow said that medical clinics in the city will begin today to provide booster doses of vaccines against the disease, as part of the efforts made by officials to contain a rise in Corona infections, which they attribute to the highly contagious delta strain.

And news agencies quoted the Ministry of Health as saying yesterday that the booster dose vaccination will start on July 1, making Russia one of the first countries to start a vaccination campaign for those previously injected with the booster dose.

While Marco Cavalieri, head of vaccine strategy at the European Medicines Agency, said during a press conference, "data based on factual evidence show that two doses of a vaccine protect against Delta."

On another topic, the European Union governments agreed yesterday to add 11 countries to the safe travel list, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar.

The decision was issued at a meeting of the ambassadors of the 27 EU countries, to be implemented in the coming days, according to the European “euronews” website.

Countries included in the safe travel list are allowed to enter the territory of the European Union for non-essential reasons, after the union imposed strict restrictions last year on non-essential travel from foreign countries due to the spread of the Corona virus.
