The Paris judicial court ordered Airbnb to pay 8.08 million euros to the City of Paris, as part of a standoff between the multinational and the capital around the regulation of seasonal rentals.

The Digital Republic law of December 1, 2017 requires the platform that rental companies obtain a registration number from the City of Paris.

But according to this one, thousands of advertisements were deprived of it.

"Tremendous victory"

In Paris as in other cities in France, owners who wish to rent their main residence on the platform cannot exceed a ceiling of 120 nights per year.

Beyond that, they must request a change of use from the Paris City Hall.

“Everything has an end, even the impunity of GAFA, reacted on Twitter Ian Brossat, deputy in charge of housing.

This is the first time in France that a community has condemned a digital giant.

The responsibility of the platforms is finally recognized.

A formidable victory for Parisians.

"

It just fell: the Paris judicial court has just ordered Airbnb to pay a fine of 8 million euros to the City of Paris for publishing illegal ads (without a registration number).

Airbnb Complies with the Law on Judgment Day

On the same day, the platform obliged Parisian owners wishing to rent on its site to fill in this registration number, including for renters already present on its site, and not only for any new advertisement created in the capital, as it says. was already doing since April 1.

"Only announcements concerning a long-term lease (more than 365 days) and a mobility lease (from one to ten months, non-renewable or renewable) are exempted," said Airbnb in a press release.

Airbnb defends itself

In February, the City of Paris had won an important victory, the highest French court having found its regulations in conformity with European law, allowing it to prosecute hundreds of unscrupulous donors.

In 2020, more than 95% of entire accommodations available on Airbnb in Paris were rented for less than 120 nights, says the platform, for whom “the vast majority of nights booked in entire Parisian accommodations were in previously registered accommodations , or who benefited from an exemption from registration ”.

According to Airbnb, Paris only represented 10% of searches for stays in France in May, while searches for rural stays on its platform increased from 24% in the summer of 2019 to 45% for the summer of 2021.
