One of the reasons for the expected record births is believed to be the ongoing pandemic, which Swedish Radio Ekot was the first to report.

Sahlgrenska Hospital has the Nordic region's largest maternity clinic and in July, 1,032 children are expected to be born, which is the highest figure in five years.

Activities as usual

The prognosis worries the Healthcare Association at Sahlgrenska, which lacks both nurses and midwives, but according to operations manager Corinne Pedroletti, operations will go around as usual.

- We work very much with staffing issues and it is precisely midwives that we do not fully have as many employees as we would like, says Corinne Pedroletti to SVT.

Top also at other hospitals

Some employees will therefore move holiday weeks or go in and take extra shifts for extra compensation.

Södra Älvsborgs hospital in Borås and Skaraborgs hospital in Skövde are also expected to have a birth peak during the summer.
