THE ESSENTIAL

  • The second round of regional elections was again marked by a record abstention, at 66% (against 66.7% in the first round).

  • The ballot gave pride of place to the outgoing since all the presidents of regions, on the left and on the right, were re-elected in metropolitan France.

The only region to switch is Reunion, where the various left Huguette Bello was elected.

  • The big winner of this second round is the LR party, with seven regions.

The presidential party LREM drinks, him, the cup and the RN of Marine Le Pen fails this time again to win the first region in its history.

TO HAVE

7:12 am: Large victory for the outgoing president in Guadeloupe as well

The outgoing president of the Guadeloupe Region, Ary Chalus (LREM), won a large victory on Sunday, collecting 72% of the vote against the socialist Josette Borel Lincertin, outgoing president of the Departmental Council (28%).

Ary Chalus, 59, is well ahead in the 32 municipalities of the archipelago.

At the head of a composite list, he narrowly missed a re-election in the first round, on June 20.

President of the regional council since 2015, after having been deputy and mayor of Baie-Mahault since 2001, Ary Chalus gathered around him faithful (from the powerful local political party GUSR led by Guy Losbar) but also more unexpected personalities, such as Cédric Cornet, young mayor of Gosier, or the former right-wing minister, Marie-Luce Penchard.

7:02 am: Outgoing bonus

So there won't have been a big surprise ... and a big change.

After a second round, again marked by record abstention, around 66%, a figure almost identical to the first round, the regional presidents remained in place.

7:00 am: The press underlines the status quo

For all of the national and regional press, this election is above all that of the "status quo", difficult to read with less than one in three voters who turned up on Sunday, as little as in the first round.

"We take the same and start again, with the greatest indifference," summarizes the daily

La Montagne

after the second round of regional and departmental elections on Sunday.

“From one ballot to another, the political map of France of the regions does not move one iota.

All that for that! ”, Notes

Le Figaro
