• The departmental elections did not mobilize the crowds in the Hauts-de-France region.

  • Among the lessons to be learned are the sharp decline of the RN but also the arrival of elected environmentalists in the Nord department.

They did not enthrall the crowds.

Like the regional ones, the departmental elections were marked by a high rate of abstention.

With only 34% turnout in the region, the ballot was clearly deserted by voters.

Read all about the lessons to be learned from this election in the five departments (Aisne, Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais, Somme) that make up the Hauts-de-France region.

A large bonus for graduates

Among the five departments of the region, none changed during these elections.

The Somme, the Oise, the Aisne and the North remain to the right while the Pas-de-Calais keeps the helm to the left.

No surprises and even confirmed majorities in most cases.

The North will change department president

If the Nord department remains on the right with 25 cantons out of 41 won, its president will change.

Elected in 2015, Jean-René Lecerf decided to hand over.

To succeed him, his 1st vice-president Christian Poiret is a big favorite to lead the most populous department in France (2.5 million inhabitants).

Environmentalists make their entry into the Nord department

Absent so far from the departmental council of the North, the ecologists make a remarkable entry into the hemicycle.

By winning in two cantons of Lille each time against socialist candidates, the Greens prove that their defeat on the wire last year in the municipal elections of the largest city in the region (227 votes difference) n ' was no accident.

The RN in sharp decline

As with the regional ones, the National Rally suffered a failure at the departmental ones.

In the North, despite his presence in 20 cantons in the second round, he won none and will therefore have no elected to the General Council.

In Pas-de-Calais, if it will be well represented on the board, the RN has lost half of its elected officials compared to 2015. They will only be six to sit instead of twelve in the previous term.

Finally, in Aisne, Oise and Somme, the National Rally loses all the seats won in 2015.

Le Pen and Darmanin console each other at the local level

If the RN and LREM did not shine in this election at the national level, Marine Le Pen and Gérald Darmanin were nevertheless elected departmental councilors.

In Pas-de-Calais, the president of the RN associated with Steve Briois, mayor of Hénin Beaumont, won the second canton of Hénin with 59.72% of the vote.

The abstention stood at 65.98%.

In the canton of Tourcoing-Nord, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, associated with Doriane Bécue, won 64.98% of the vote with an abstention which reached 80%.
