According to the Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU), vacationers who return to Germany from abroad should be closely checked for vaccination cards and negative corona tests at the borders.

It is crucial that tests are carried out before entry and that the test certificates at the border crossings and airports are not just randomly checked, said Holetschek, who is also chairman of the conference of health ministers.

Hundreds of Germans have meanwhile ended their vacation in Portugal prematurely in order to leave the new virus variant area as soon as possible.

From Tuesday, the new classification of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for Portugal and Russia as risk variant areas will apply.

There is no possibility of free testing on return, but those who have recovered and who have been vaccinated must also adhere to a 14-day quarantine.

With 1604 new corona infections within 24 hours, the highest value since February was registered in Portugal on Friday, according to the authorities.

The situation in Petersburg comes to a head before the European Championship game

In Russia, too, the corona numbers have risen sharply since the beginning of the month. On Sunday, more than 20,500 new infections were reported nationwide within one day. The situation in Europe's largest city, Moscow, is particularly dramatic. 114 people there died with the virus within 24 hours - more than ever since the pandemic began over a year ago. The focus is also on the European championship city of St. Petersburg, where the situation will worsen before the quarter-final game on Friday. According to statistics, there were more than 100 deaths within one day. Russia is now increasing the vaccination pressure so as not to completely lose control of the pandemic. In several regions there is a compulsory vaccination for certain industries.

In Germany, the health authorities reported 538 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence nationwide as 5.7. 71.4 million vaccine doses have been administered since December. 44.4 million Germans have their first vaccination, that is 53.3 percent. 28.9 million (34.8 percent) have also been vaccinated for the second time. In order to be better protected against the particularly contagious Delta variant, several opposition politicians called for the second vaccination to be brought forward over the weekend.
