The outgoing president of Guyana Rodolphe Alexandre (DVG) came out ahead in the first round of the elections on Sunday with 43.72% of the votes cast, without obtaining the victory he hoped for in this first round.

Rodolphe Alexandre, some of whose running mate is on the right, heads the CTG, a local authority in Guyana (merger of the region and the department at the end of 2015).

Maintaining the criticized ballot

His opponents criticized the maintenance of the election due to a difficult health context in this French territory of South America where a third wave of the Covid-19 epidemic continues with an average incidence rate of around 300 cases over 7 days per 100,000 inhabitants for at least 2 weeks.

The positivity rate remains high around 12% and even 19% on the west coast where there is hospital tension in terms of occupancy of intensive care beds.

17 people died from Covid-19 in 11 days between June 6 and 17 in this territory of 300,000 inhabitants with an area close to Austria.

Supported by Christiane Taubira

"Having maintained these elections in this health context generated this exceptional rate of abstention, a record rate for local elections," lamented Jean-Paul Ferreira (DVG) in Guyana on the 1st Sunday evening.

This Amerindian mayor of the small town of Awala Yalimapo on the North West coast comes in 3rd position with 23.34% of the votes cast.

Supported by the former Keeper of the Seals, Guyanese Christiane Taubira, a few days before the ballot, the Amerindian councilor only prevails over his town.

The deputy candidate Gabriel Serville (DVG) blasted a campaign with “two-speed means.

Some travel by car and canoe while others cross Guyana by helicopter ”, targeting the outgoing president's team.
