WHO: spread in Africa "very worrying"

The spread of Covid-19 cases in Africa is "very, very worrying", said last Friday the head of emergency situations at WHO, doctor Michael Ryan, with the spread of more contagious variants and a dangerously low vaccination rate.

According to data collected by the WHO, 116,500 new infections occurred in Africa in the week ending 13 June, 25,500 more than the previous week. Ryan pointed out that, seen as a whole, the continent doesn't look that bad, accounting for just over 5% of new cases registered worldwide last week and 2.2% of deaths. But in some countries, infections have doubled and in others they are increasing by more than 50%. The third wave of Covid-19 cases "is amplifying and accelerating" in Africa with variants, the World Health Organization (WHO) office on the continent had already alerted on Thursday, asking for an increase in the supply of vaccines.

As Matshidiso Moeti, WHO director for Africa, Ryan pointed out that the continent is much more vulnerable because it has received so few Covid vaccines, when Europe or the United States have high immunization rates that allow them to return to normal with a drastic drop in infections and deaths.

The harsh reality - Ryan pointed out - is that in an area with multiple variants that are more contagious and potentially have a stronger impact, we have left large parts of the population and vulnerable populations in Africa deprived of vaccination protection, while health systems they are already fragile. This is the result of an unfair distribution of vaccines. "This is particularly true of Africa, where only 1% of the population is fully immunized. Up until then, Africa had been less hard hit by the pandemic than others. regions, but that does not mean that this situation will remain. "It is completely premature - concluded Ryan - to think that the next wave in Africa will be only a short rain and not a storm", said the doctor. And he added: "I think we have to take what is happening in Africa very, very seriously. "

India confirms the decline in victims and infections

Following the release of the latest pandemic data, the number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 29,935,221. This morning, the New Delhi Ministry of Health reported on its website the discovery of 53,256 new infections within 24 hours. In the same period, the infection killed another 1,422 people for a total of 388,135, while 78,190 patients returned negative to the swab. Health authorities particularly emphasize the fact that for the 39th consecutive day, daily recoveries continued to outstrip new infections. Active cases dropped further to 702,887. The cases reported in this morning's bulletin are 4,893 fewer than yesterday's (58,419); deaths also fell by 154, from 1,576 yesterday.

Japan: 376 new cases in Tokyo

The Tokyo metropolitan government in its daily bulletin yesterday reported 376 new cases of coronavirus infection, 72 more than the average of the previous week. The authorities are concerned by the significant number of infections in people under the age of 50, which account for more than half of the total. The number of patients hospitalized in serious condition has also risen to 45 cases, confirming a picture under control but with some critical issues carefully monitored by experts given the imminent start of the Olympic Games scheduled for next 23 July.

Germany under 500 cases for the first time since August

For the first time since 10 August last year, German health authorities report fewer than 500 new coronavirus cases confirmed within 24 hours. The Robert Koch Institute records 346 infections and ten deaths. A week ago the bulletin mentioned 549 new cases. The incidence over seven days, nationwide, is now at 8.6. A week ago it was at 16.6, a month ago at 67.3. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Robert Koch Institute has recorded 3,722,327 infections with 90,395 deaths.
