EU Representative: The Vienna talks between the parties involved in the Iranian nuclear agreement are "close to an agreement"

Xinhua News Agency, Vienna, June 20 (Reporter Yu Tao) The relevant parties to the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue concluded the sixth round of talks on the 20th in Vienna, the capital of Austria, on the issue of the United States and Iran's resumption of compliance.

EU representative Mora said after the meeting that the talks are "close to an agreement."

The political director-general meeting of the Joint Commission on the Iranian Nuclear Agreement was held in the Vienna Hotel in the afternoon.

The meeting was chaired by Mora, Deputy Secretary-General of the European Union’s External Action Agency, and representatives from China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and Iran attended the meeting.

Mora told the media after the meeting: "We are closer to reaching an agreement, but we have not reached the goal."

Mora said that the talks have made progress on some technical issues, and all parties have a clearer understanding of the technical text of the agreement.

Representatives of the parties will return to their home countries for consultations, and hope that when they return to Vienna to start the next round of talks, they will come up with a clearer idea of how to finally reach an agreement.

Mora did not specify when the talks will resume, but he said he expects that the interim technical agreement reached by Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency on the verification work will be postponed again after it expires on June 24.

In February of this year, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency reached an interim technical agreement of up to three months. The International Atomic Energy Agency will continue its necessary inspection and supervision activities for up to three months, and Iran will preserve some nuclear facilities. Video surveillance data.

If the United States lifts its sanctions on Iran within three months, Iran will hand over surveillance data to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

If the sanctions are not lifted by then, Iran will destroy the information.

On May 24, the two parties agreed to extend the expired provisional technology agreement for one month.

In July 2015, Iran reached an Iran nuclear agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany.

According to the agreement, Iran promised to limit its nuclear program and the international community lifted sanctions against Iran.

In May 2018, the US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, and subsequently restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iran.

Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of certain provisions of the Iran nuclear agreement, but promised that the measures taken are "reversible."

The talks between the parties to the Iranian nuclear agreement began in Vienna on April 6 to discuss the issue of the United States and Iran's resumption of compliance. Six rounds of talks have been held so far.

Because the United States has withdrawn from the Iran nuclear agreement and Iran refuses to have direct talks with the United States, the U.S. representative cannot attend the talks.

The EU representative acted as the coordinator to contact all parties involved in the Iranian nuclear agreement and the United States individually.
