"If we see an increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus, the main rule is to take the necessary action and act in the case of the Olympic Games in the same way as with any other event," the agency quotes the statement of the Secretary General of the Japanese government Katsunobo Kato.

He noted that if the situation with the coronavirus pandemic deteriorates, the authorities may revise the rules for holding events, up to the decision not to allow spectators to the Olympic facilities or significantly reduce the allowed number of spectators.

At the moment, the organizers of the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo are planning to admit about 20 thousand people to the opening ceremony.

Earlier it was reported that Japan is considering the possibility of introducing a new emergency regime for the period of the Olympics.
