Two people died in the accident of their tourist plane which crashed Friday early evening in Thoiry (Savoie), in the Bauges massif, before igniting, said firefighters and the prefecture.

The tragedy occurred around 7 p.m. on the road to the Col des Prés, at an altitude of some 1,100 meters, when the victims' CTLS, a small ULM type device, fell for an undetermined reason before hitting the ground.

"The two occupants of the aircraft, which took off from Annecy, died in the explosion which followed the crash," the Savoie prefecture said in a statement, without however specifying the identity of the victims.

Alerted by two residents, according to firefighters, rescuers could not do anything, finding the burned plane and the bodies of its two passengers "charred".

Investigators from the BGTA (air transport gendarmerie brigade) went to the site to determine the circumstances of the accident, added the prefecture.
