During the period 2016 to 2020, 114 people died in recreational boat accidents in the country, according to figures from the Swedish Transport Agency compiled by the news agency Siren.

Norrbotten stands out with the most fatalities during the period.

Then comes Västra Götaland and Stockholm.

In Norrbotten 17 people died under the age of 5, in Västra Götaland 16 people and in Stockholm 14.

Last year, 27 people preliminarily died in recreational boat accidents in Sweden.

It can also be compared to an average of over 100 people per year in the early 1970s.

Two factors behind the large reduction are, among other things, increased use of life jackets and safer boats.

Increased interest in boats - but no serious accidents

Despite the fact that the alarms have increased during the pandemic's homesteading, so far no more serious accidents have occurred.

- We were a little worried about it last year as we have noticed an increased interest in boats, says Egil Wright, administrator at the Swedish Transport Agency, to the news agency Siren.
