Former Montpellier coach Michel Der Zakarian will commit to Brest for a period of three years, one of which is optional, AFP learned, confirming information from the daily L'Equipe.

Der Zakarian, aged 58, will take over from Olivier Dall'Oglio, who has gone the other way since he was appointed at the beginning of June at the head of the Montpellier team.

The new technician will be responsible for ensuring the maintenance within the Brest club, which returned to Ligue 1 two years ago.

Brest sports director Grégory Lorenzi therefore chose + Der Zak + rather than David Guion, the former coach of Reims, who was also expected.

Since 2017, and his arrival from Reims (2016-2017), Der Zakarian has met the expectations of President Laurent Nicollin, who to explain the departure of the technician said he was "eager to move on".

Each season, he achieved the goal of finishing in the first half of the ranking (10th, 6th, 8th, 8th) flirting with Europe.

Last year, the former Nantes coach (2007-2008, 2012-16), also passed through Clermont (2009-2012), qualified Montpellier for the semi-final of the Coupe de France, failing on penalties opposite Paris SG.

Der Zakarian is one of the few coaches to have led the Montpellier team for four years.

Until then, only René Girard (2009-2013) and Michel Mézy had stretched their mandate over such a long period within a club long known for its instability.

Brest should make some changes to its workforce before entering its third straight season in Ligue 1.
