WHO: Delta variant present in 29 out of 53 countries in Europe

18 June 2021 The Delta variant mainly affects young people and adults between 5 and 49 years old: 2.5 times more than it affects the over 50s. This is the data that captures the situation in Great Britain last February, the result of the survey coordinated by Steven Riley, of Imperial College London, and online on a site that hosts articles pending review by the scientific community.

Researchers measured the prevalence of the Delta variant by age group, which is the proportion of cases of infection due to the variant present in a population at any given time. At the time the most affected areas were those of the North West of Great Britain, in particular that of Greater Manchester in eastern Lancashire and it was during this research that the Delta overtaking of the Alpha variant was observed.

The analysis also showed that among young people most infections occurred in those who had not been vaccinated.
