The World Health Organization issued a report showing that--

Unpaid blood donation, China ranks in the forefront of the world

Blood cannot be artificially synthesized, cannot be replaced, and cannot be stored for a long time.

Therefore, adequate, safe, and continuous blood supply is an important guarantee for clinical medical treatment and patient life safety.

At a regular press conference held by the National Health Commission a few days ago, Guo Yanhong, Inspector of the Medical Administration and Hospital Administration of the National Health Commission, introduced that the number of unpaid blood donations nationwide increased from 328,000 in 1998 to 15.53 million in 2020, an increase of 47 times. , The blood donation rate per 1,000 population increased from 4.8‰ in 1998 to 11.1‰ in 2020.

During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the national blood collection volume and number of blood collections increased by 17% and 17.9% respectively compared with the period of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period.

The Global Blood Safety Report released by the World Health Organization shows that China ranks among the top in the world in terms of unpaid blood donation, blood safety, and clinical blood use.

The number of unpaid blood donations and the amount of blood collected have increased for more than 20 years

"Since the promulgation and implementation of the Blood Donation Law in 1998, the number of people who donate blood without compensation and the amount of blood collected in my country have increased for more than 20 years." Guo Yanhong said that despite the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia last year, the number of people who donated blood without compensation in the country still reached 15.53 million. The amount of blood collected reached 26.36 million units, a total of 5,272 tons. The amount of blood collected was only 0.48% less than in 2019, and it was not greatly affected by the epidemic.

The situation of unpaid blood donation this year has improved further. From January to April, the number of unpaid blood donations across the country reached 5.119 million, with 8.845 million units of blood donated, totaling 1,769 tons.

The number of unpaid blood donations and the volume of blood donations increased by 4% and 4.5% respectively over the same period in 2019.

Since the "Blood Donation Law of the People's Republic of China" was promulgated and implemented, China has established a voluntary blood donation system. A total of 452 blood stations have been built nationwide, forming a provincial blood center as the leader, prefecture-level central blood stations as the main body and central blood banks as supplement The blood center service system is horizontal to the side and vertical to the bottom.

Clinical blood has also achieved full coverage of nucleic acid testing to ensure blood safety.

In order to ensure blood supply in key areas and important time points, especially to strengthen blood protection for major public emergencies and accidents, China has established a national blood linkage guarantee mechanism to strengthen blood distribution management.

During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, a total of 2463.6 tons of cross-regional blood was allocated across the country, effectively guaranteeing transient, regional and partial blood supply shortages, and achieving a stable supply of clinical blood.

Healthy adult blood donation will not affect health

The country has strict compulsory standards for whether or not to donate blood free of charge. It requires general physical examination before blood donation and more than 50 questions to determine whether or not blood can be donated.

"According to my country's health examination requirements and standards, through these years of practice, we believe that blood donation is safe and will not affect health." said Liu Jiang, director of the Beijing Blood Center.

The World Health Organization believes that a healthy adult who donates blood does not exceed 13% of his total blood volume and has no adverse effects on the body.

The total blood volume in the human body is about 7% to 8% of the body weight. For an adult weighing 50 kg, the total blood volume in the body is about 3500 to 4000 ml.

"According to the national standard of blood donation-200ml or 400ml, if calculated according to 400ml, it is 10%, which is much lower than the World Health Organization's 13% safe blood donation standard." Liu Jiang said, the human body has a strong circulating blood volume. Buffer capacity. After blood donation, the blood of liver and spleen and other organs will be replenished in time, and the circulating blood volume will be restored, without causing significant changes in hemodynamics.

At the same time, the body will also speed up the production of new blood, which can be replenished in a relatively short period of time.

Due to some individual differences, some blood donors have short-term dizziness or fatigue after donating blood. This is a normal physiological reaction and will soon recover. "So we believe that healthy adults donating blood will not affect their health."

There are some simple precautions before and after blood donation, such as light diet and normal sleep before donating blood; do not take a bath within 24 hours after donating blood, and do not let the eye of the needle get water.

In addition, don't do strenuous exercise, let alone eat and drink, just keep a normal life.

“Recalling the most severe stage of the epidemic situation last year, the street blood collection was once faced with difficulties due to the impact of crowd control measures.” Guo Yanhong said that the majority of unpaid blood donors responded to the call, put on masks and walked out of the house, stretched out their arms, and donated blood.

Recovered patients from the new crown pneumonia are also grateful and enthusiastically donated the recovery period plasma to save the lives of others.

"Thanks to the thousands of blood donors who donated blood that can be regenerated and saved lives that cannot be repeated."

Create an atmosphere where the whole society respects and cares for unpaid blood donors

According to the blood donation law, the National Health Commission, in conjunction with relevant departments, commends unpaid blood donors every two years.

The number of recipients of the 2018-2019 Free Blood Donation Award has reached 600,000, an increase of 51% over the previous year.

"From such figures, we can see that more and more citizens of the right age are actively participating in the activities of unpaid blood donation." Guo Yanhong said.

In addition to state-level honors and encouragement, some localities have issued a number of local regulations, stipulating that in addition to guaranteeing emergency blood, unpaid blood donors can give priority to blood.

Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hainan and other places implemented the "three exemptions" for the winners of the National Free Blood Donation Award-exemption of public transportation fees, exemption of government-sponsored parks and scenic spots, and exemption of outpatient registration fees for non-profit medical institutions .

Beijing has also introduced an insurance mechanism for unpaid blood donors and presents insurance to blood donors.

"These measures have created an atmosphere in which the whole society respects and cares for unpaid blood donors, and also promotes the spirit of fraternity, dedication, mutual assistance, and friendship for unpaid blood donation." Guo Yanhong said that July and August are coming soon. This stage is both summer and flood season. It is still the traditional off-season for blood collection, calling on more healthy citizens of the right age to actively donate blood.
