Gennaro Gattuso will ultimately not be the coach of Fiorentina: three weeks after his appointment, the Tuscan club announced on Thursday the divorce with the ex-Naples coach and started looking for a new technician.

"La Fiorentina and Rino Gattuso, by mutual agreement, have decided not to follow up on the prior agreements and not to start together next season," La Viola said in a statement.

According to the Italian press, great tensions had appeared in recent days about the strategy to be implemented and the means to be devoted to the recruitment of new players.

La Fiorentina, owned by American-Italian businessman Rocco Commisso, said "they immediately got to work to identify a technician to lead the team towards the results that the club and the city deserve".

Gattuso, 43, was appointed on May 25 on the bench of Fiorentina for two seasons, less than 48 hours after the announcement of his departure from Naples, with the mission to restore the coat of arms of the "Viola" after one season complicated (13th).

He was not to take formal office until July 1.

The 2006 world champion with the Italy team was to succeed Giuseppe Iachini, who was recalled in March after the surprise resignation of Cesare Prandelli when Fiorentina was 14th in Serie A. Iachini himself had left the place to Prandelli only a few months before, in November 2020, in a funny game of musical chairs à la Viola.

Sky Sport evoked several names on Wednesday evening to now join Fiorentina after this divorce with Gattuso, such as the French Rudi Garcia or the Italians Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Ranieri.
