The data center provider Equinix continues to focus on strong growth in Frankfurt.

The American company is currently preparing the construction of two large data centers, so-called hyperscaler data centers.

Now it has announced three more for the location on the Main.

Almost a billion euros are being invested here alone, according to a statement published on Wednesday.

The rapid expansion course is made possible after the company, which is listed on the US stock exchange Nasdaq, has found a financially strong investor in GIC, the Singapore sovereign wealth fund. GIC had already launched an investment program worth three billion dollars with Equinix, now the fund has more than doubled its stake, with 6.9 billion dollars available. With this, Equinix wants to increase its global network of high-performance data centers, in which the operators of cloud services, i.e. Google, Microsoft and Amazon, are renting, to 32.

The centers are being built in Dublin, Paris, Osaka, Tokyo and São Paulo, but only in Frankfurt does Equinix see the need for five of the particularly fast and efficient server farms. This has to do with the world's busiest Internet hub De-Cix, but also with the other data centers located here. Companies and telecommunications providers operate their servers in them, and in future they should have the fastest access to cloud storage.

With these plans, however, the industry's need for space and energy continues to rise, with a number of companies planning major projects in or near Frankfurt. To this end, Mainova is continuing to expand the power grids, and the operators are also trying to improve their energy balance with green electricity certificates. In order to alleviate the space problem, the new Frankfurt coalition has decided to concentrate the data centers on certain areas. There is still no plan, but in the Seckbach district of Frankfurt, where Equinix operates a number of data centers around Friesstrasse, there are already complaints from residents that the large buildings are moving too close to their houses.
