Paris has long been both a municipality and a department.

But this is no longer the case.

While the Parisians are expected in the polling stations on Sunday for the first round of the regional elections, they will not vote for the departmentals unlike the voters of the other departments of Ile-de-France.

Why don't we vote in the departmental in Paris?

The city of Paris is "a collectivity with a single status" among the territorial institutions, indicates the Ministry of the Interior.

Since January 1, 2019, the commune of Paris and the department have merged.

It is now the Council of Paris, elected during municipal elections, which constitutes the deliberative and decision-making assembly of this local authority.

Administrative simplification

This merger is the result of an initiative by the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, in the summer of 2015. On the town hall website it is stated that this provision "puts an end to a tangle of skills which was until now illegible for citizens and which unnecessarily complicated the administrative procedures of Parisians ”.

Regarding the regional elections, “the city of Paris constitutes a section of the Île-de-France region,” says Place Beauvau.

“The number of candidates associated with this section is set at 42.” These June 20 and 27, there will therefore be only one election in Paris, the regional ballot.
