• As of January 1, the rules for access to waste collection centers in the Lille metropolitan area will change.

  • The number of free passages will be limited for individuals.

  • The metropolis puts forward reasons for fluidity and rationalization.

Rationalized waste.

Change in sight in the recycling centers of the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL).

Private and professional users will have to get used to some new features from January 1, 2022.

While access was unlimited for individuals, now light vehicles and trailers less than two meters will only have 36 free passages (18 for utilities and trailers over two meters).

Beyond that, you will have to pay for any deposit.

The rule in force was certainly unlimited access, but paying above a deposit of two cubic meters.

There will be no more unlimited passages

For professionals, they will still have to pay but will be limited to 36 annual passages.

From the 37th, another solution will have to be found, in professional waste treatment networks.

Saturdays will now be prohibited for them: access will only be open from Monday to Friday.

The deposits of cardboard waste, scrap metal, waste electrical and electronic equipment remain free.

For the European Metropolis of Lille, these changes aim to streamline and rationalize access to waste reception centers.

No more bill to make for an individual who deposits more than two cubic meters, reduced waiting times on Saturdays as there are no more professionals….

"Thirty-six passages per year is already a lot, around three per month," insists the vice-president in charge of the subject, Régis Cauche.

The inhabitants of the metropolis can rationalize each contribution.

For a user with normal activity, this is sufficient ”.

Basically, the MEL targets fake private individuals and certain semi-professional activities.

Fear of renewed tensions

Not everyone is convinced. "Local residents who like to come every day or every week, there are some, they are sensitive to sorting", judges a connoisseur of recycling centers. "This risks adding new problems with reception staff in waste reception centers, when it is already tense, but also of increasing the number of litter deposits", adds a trade unionist from Esterra. A deposit problem that the MEL does not deny. Standardization of municipal decrees at the level of the MEL and a single fine amount are also in the pipeline. Supporting communication campaign.

Thirteen waste collection centers are currently spread over the territory of the metropolis.

An under-equipment which must be absorbed during the mandate with three new constructions.

The first, that of Wattrelos, which aims in particular to relieve congestion in Roubaix, should be operational by 2024.
