Latin America La Patria Grande seeks to replicate with Pedro Castillo the times of Chávez, Lula and Kirchner
Peru elections Latin American leftist leaders join Castillo's "self-coronation"
Once all the votes were counted, what had already been known for eight days was confirmed: the leftist
Pedro Castillo
is the virtual president of Peru,
defeating his rival,
Keiko Fujimori,
by just 44,000 votes. The end of the scrutiny occurs in a climate of high polarization and social tension, increased by the annulment appeals filed by the candidacy of Fuerza Popular.
The flag bearer of Peru Libre obtained
8,835,579 votes, 50.12%,
compared to 8,791,521 of the ballots of the dictator's daughter.
"A new time has begun. Millions of Peruvians have stood up in defense of their dignity and justice. Thanks to the peoples of all Peru who, from their diversity and historical strength, have given me their trust.
My government will be due to all citizens ",
highlighted the professor and trade unionist in his social networks, where he already defines himself as president-elect.
Now it is the turn of the National Elections Jury, which must decide before the appeals filed by the populist leader.
So far, the highest electoral body has rejected most of the applications.
"The most important thing is missing,"
however, Fujimori countered after learning the official conclusion of the recount, released by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), in reference to the requests for the nullity of 800 voting records.
"We are going to defend democracy in Peru," insisted the right-wing leader, who will know next Monday if she should go back to prison or continue on provisional freedom.
On Fujimori weighs a request for 30 years in prison, made by the Prosecutor's Office, for money laundering and criminal organization.
Various political actors have recognized Castillo's victory, including the centrist Morado Party, to which President
Fernando Sagasti
belongs
.
From Bolivia, former President
Evo Morales
has once again broken into the politics of the neighboring country by making a call to "defend the victory" of Castillo.
It is the third time that
Alberto Fujimori's
daughter has been
defeated by a minimal difference.
In 2011 he fell to the leftist
Ollanta Humala
by just a 3% difference.
Shorter was the one that separated him from
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski
in 2016, 0.24% of the votes, very similar to the one made public today.
