04 September 2016The meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister, Sushma Swaraj, in Rome "was made possible because finally our Navy riflemen are in Italy. This was stated by the Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni at the Unity party in Rome interviewed by the director of RaiNews24, Antonio Di Bella. The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the holding of the meeting, the first high-level bilateral meeting after a long period of time. They reviewed the state of bilateral relations and discussed the prospects for cooperation in trade and investment, science and technology, the fight against terrorism, culture and other areas of mutual interest. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between Italy and India in multilateral fora. Minister Swaraj also expressed his heartfelt condolences for the recent earthquake that hit Central Italy, causing extensive damage and the death of numerous victims.



Gentiloni then commented on the recent German elections: "I hope that the courage shown a year ago by Angela Merkel in the migrant crisis will resist despite these electoral signals, which do not lead the CDU to negative positions" in view of the elections in Germany scheduled between a year. More generally, on Europe he said: "I believe that today's EU of 28 can contain a narrower circle that shares the single currency, the Schengen treaty and above all a better coordination of defense.
