A neighbor of the Sants neighborhood of Barcelona committed suicide this Monday afternoon by throwing himself through an interior courtyard of the building where he was staying when he was going to be evicted by the judicial procession.

The demand for non-payment of rent, presented last January by a private owner of the property, was processed in the Court of First Instance 3 of Barcelona since the tenant had not paid since June 2020. The contract was signed in 2018.

According to judicial sources, when the lawsuit was registered in February, the court transferred the tenant who requested free justice, so the processing is paralyzed until a lawyer is assigned. In addition, when the court gave the tenant the form to indicate if he needed help from Social Services, the man did not fill it in, so the judge did not have authorization to transfer information about the procedure to Social Services.

Despite this, the court provides the defendant with information on how he can directly access Social Services. The first date set for the eviction is suspended derived from the request and processing of free justice and on the second, this Monday, it was the judicial procession to proceed with the eviction. Judicial sources indicate that last Thursday the defendant's lawyer presented a report from Social Services in court indicating the vulnerability of the tenant and requesting the suspension of the launch. With the data that is collected in the report, the court dismisses the suspension because the circumstances that are collected there are not those regulated by the Royal Decree as vulnerability that allows the suspension of the launch.

The City Council indicates that the tenant was in the process of mediating with the property of the home and was offered an alternative to reside.

When the judicial procession came, the man opened the door and then threw himself into the inner courtyard.

The Platform for People Affected by Mortgages has called a rally to reject this death this Tuesday in front of the Government Delegation in Catalonia, considering that "they are not suicides, they are murders."
