Lebanon has announced that it has administered more than 40,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 in just one weekend.

A “marathon” vaccination campaign was organized this Saturday and Sunday by the Ministry of Health.

A total of 41,785 doses were injected.

Any unvaccinated person over the age of 55 could go, without an appointment, to one of the 50 or so vaccination centers open in the country.

People with disabilities over 16 were also affected.

Authorities said 19,089 doses were administered on Saturday.

Sunday, at 6 p.m., 22,696 doses had been injected during the day, according to a tweet from the Ministry of Health.

For Firas Abiad, director of the main hospital mobilized in the fight against the coronavirus in Lebanon, this vaccination campaign was "a success at all levels".

Similar operations have been carried out in Lebanon in recent weeks.

Mired in its worst economic crisis since the civil war (1975-1990), the country has recorded more than 542,000 cases of Covid-19, including more than 7,700 deaths.

More than 927,000 residents have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the Ministry of Health.
