The night was still tense in the popular district of Sidi Hassine west of Tunis, this Sunday, June 13.

Faced with the police officers deployed on both sides of the streets, groups of young people are expressing their anger with anti-police slogans, six days after the suspicious death of a resident of the neighborhood, Ahmed Ben Ammar, during his arrest by the law enforcement.

The next day, a teenager from the same neighborhood was beaten up and stripped naked by a plainclothes policeman, according to footage filmed by amateur videos.

They have toured the Tunisian web, arousing indignation.

More than forty associations denounced these abuses and on Saturday afternoon, a demonstration on Avenue Habib Bourguiba against police violence led to clashes between demonstrators and authorities.

A judicial inquiry has been opened into the circumstances of Ahmed Ben Ammar's death.

These two events are not isolated.

Since the revolution, impunity and the lack of reform of the security institution have often been denounced in Tunisia.

President Kais Saied on Friday summoned the head of government and also interim interior minister, Hichem Mechichi, to express his "

anger

" and "

condemnation

" of the latest events.

A new event starting from the Sidi Hassine district is scheduled for Monday June 14 at 5 p.m. Tunis time.
