June 13, 2021Ione Belarra, current Minister of Social Rights in the Spanish government, won the primaries of the left-wing Podemos party organized to elect the new general secretary of the party after the departure of Pablo Iglesias.

It got about 85% of the 53,000 votes cast by those enrolled in the training, according to the Efe news agency.

The results were announced during the fourth Podemos congress, which is being held in Alcorcón (a suburb of Madrid).

Far exceeded the other two candidates in the running, Esteban Tettamanti Bogliaccini and Fernando Barredo.

Belarra will replace Pablo Iglesias, historical leader of Podemos from when it was founded in January 2014 until May of this year, at which time he announced his farewell to "party" politics.

"Today is a beautiful day, a day in which we can finally begin to glimpse the hugs again and recognize the smiles under the masks, with hope and brotherhood," Belarra said after the announcement of the results.

His candidacy was supported by the main figures of Podemos, as well as by politicians close to the formation, one among all the current deputy premier and minister of labor Yolanda Díaz. Iglesias was not present at the congress held yesterday and today.
