A woman armed with a knife who was heading towards Israeli forces was shot dead by an Israeli border guard.

The scene took place at a crossing point in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel, police said.

The border guard at the Qalandiya crossing point, between Jerusalem and the West Bank, unsuccessfully urged the woman to stop, before opening fire, the Israeli police added, without giving further details.

Several Palestinians have died in recent days 

On Friday, a Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli soldiers during clashes on the sidelines of an anti-settlement protest near Nablus in the northern West Bank.

And on Thursday, three Palestinians were killed in the West Bank in an exchange of fire with Israeli forces carrying out an operation to arrest wanted Palestinians in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

Clashes have intensified in recent weeks in the West Bank, in the wake of protests in Jerusalem and the 11-day war in May between the Palestinian armed movement Hamas in power in Gaza, a Palestinian territory under Israeli blockade, and the Israeli army .

About 475,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank, home to more than 2.8 million Palestinians.
