June 13, 2021 A strong earthquake shook central and southern Guatemala without causing casualties or material damage, according to initial information reported by a civil protection spokesperson.

The quake occurred at 20:58 local (4.58 in Italy) with its epicenter located in the Pacific Ocean, 23 km deep, off the coast of Escuintla (south), the spokesman said.

However, it was distinctly felt by the population in the south and in the center of the country, where the capital is located. Guatemala is at the convergence of several tectonic plates and earthquakes are relatively frequent.
