US President Joe Biden will receive German Chancellor Angela Merkel on July 15 at the White House, his spokesperson announced on Friday at the G7 summit in Cornwall.
The German leader, who is due to leave the chancellery after the legislative elections in September, had notoriously difficult relations with Donald Trump.
"Chancellor Merkel's visit will highlight the deep ties between the United States and Germany," said Jen Psaki in a statement, specifying that the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate would be among the priority subjects of the meet.
Warm up the relationship
To date, the Democratic president has received, in person, only two foreign leaders: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
If Germany and the United States traditionally maintain close relations, the mandate of Donald Trump had been marked by a notable cooling between Berlin and Washington.
The former president had attacked in particular what he considered the too low German contribution to the NATO budget, but also to German exports.
He announced in July, without consultation, the redeployment of 12,000 American soldiers stationed in Germany.
This project was abandoned by Joe Biden as soon as he came to power.
