“Russia can play an important role in supporting a peaceful settlement of the crisis,” the European Council said in a statement.
During the talks, Michel also said that the Belarusian authorities "need to release political prisoners and start a comprehensive national dialogue."
Earlier, the head of the European Council discussed with Putin the availability of vaccines against coronavirus.
