The debate between historians and enthusiasts has been going on for decades.

Profiles like Jan Guillou and Dick Harrison have taken issue with the question - where did the historically important battle of Gestilren in 1210 really take place?

After a ground radar survey in Varvs parish outside Tidaholm, hopes are now kindled to finally get an answer to the controversial question.

As early as 1910, a memorial to the battle was erected on the same site.

But the place is not the only one that has been pointed out, the battle has also been placed in Östergötland and Uppland.

"A lot of attention"

Finding out that the battle really took place in Tidaholm would mean a lot, according to Anja Praesto, museum curator at Tidaholm Museum.

- There would be a lot of attention and perhaps continued research that benefits Tidaholm as a tourist destination and tourist attraction, she says.

The Battle of Gestilren marked the end of a long power struggle between the Erikska and Sverkerska clans.

Sverker the Younger fell in battle and then the situation in the country stabilized and the journey to the Sweden we know today began.
