Dia Gaff was only 20 years old when the gang violence took her cousin and her world changed brutally - forever.

She and Shayan Gaff, then a 22-year-old teacher student with no connection to gang crime, had eaten dinner, smoked a hookah and "talked about everything" when the shots fell.

- It's a bit like on film, there is a beep after a shot.

It was just such a feeling where the sound is muted for a few seconds before you get back to reality, says Dia Gaff in an interview in Politikbyrån and continues:

- That was when I heard Shayan screaming and calling for help.

What was he shouting?

- He shouted "aj".

He held his chest and screamed in pain until he collapsed.

Then he looked up and said "God, why me?".

That was the last thing I heard him say that night.

Or yes, forever.

"Horrible development I never thought would happen in Sweden"

Shayan Gaff was shot by mistake, a month later another person described as his double was murdered.

Shayan had no links to crime, and is not the first to be the victim of gang violence.

The fatal shootings of Karolin Hakim and 12-year-old Adriana are two other examples.

- It is a terrible development that I never thought would happen in Sweden.

My parents came to Sweden to create a good future for their children, since then it has become like this.

I think it's awful and very sick indeed.

I do not know what you can say more than that, says Dia Gaff.

Shayan Gaff's killer was later sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Despite this, Dia Gaff feels "extremely powerless".

- We have tried to make our voices heard now for almost three years, but it just continues.

Every day you wake up to an article on a news site about another fatal shooting.

It's awful.

What confidence do you have that politicians and the judiciary can curb this development?

- I want confidence that they will be able to solve this situation, but it feels like what is happening now is stronger in some way.

- It is not the case that there are two shootings that have happened or even ten or twenty, but hundreds that have been going on for several years.

Why does nothing happen?

The message to Stefan Löfven

Dia Gaff would like to see stricter staff.

But also wants to focus on the closure of schools, leisure centers, schools and other meeting places.

- I want politicians to realize that this is a national crisis that they actually have to take seriously.

If you could say something to Stefan Löfven, what would it be?

- Can you see us and can you hear us people from the suburbs?

We are also human beings, just like the rest of you.

The Politburo's latest section "Tough & Tougher" is about how politicians compete to launch tougher punishments, more police and more wiretapping. But are it the toughest proposals that break the gangs and win the battle for the voters? Watch the whole episode here on SVT Play.
