The Berlin public prosecutor's office brought charges against former VW boss Martin Winterkorn for making false statements in the Bundestag's investigative committee into the emissions affair in January 2017.

The now 74-year-old is said to have made “deliberately false information” on the question of when he was informed about the use of software to manipulate the exhaust gas values, the authority announced on Wednesday.

The indictment was brought at the Berlin Regional Court.

At that time, Winterkorn denied having known about the manipulation before the diesel scandal became known in September 2015.

The Berlin public prosecutor's office, however, has evidence that Winterkorn is said to have learned of the illegal defeat device as early as May 2015, reports the Bild newspaper.
