Between January and July, 34 IVA nurses at Karolinska in Solna and Huddinge are expected to resign.

The summer staffing thus looks to be a challenge for iva care as several of the summer's work shifts still lack staff.

- It is an extreme situation according to the employer.

During the pandemic, the scheduling has had to take place on a daily basis, says Ingrid Allerstam, elected representative at the Healthcare Association and specialist nurse at iva.

Operations Manager: "Do everything we can"

Björn Persson, operations manager for IVA at Karolinska University Hospital, admits that it has been difficult to give staff the opportunity to recover during the pandemic.

But the situation is expected to improve when the covid patients become fewer and when the crisis agreement has now been concluded.

- It will obviously be a very strained situation for intensive care.

We recruit and do everything we can to make it a reasonable load this autumn and see that many people choose to train as an intensive care nurse, so in the long run it will be better, says Björn Persson.

Promised continuous vacation

Despite the strained staff situation, a four-week continuous holiday is promised to the IVA staff at Karolinska in Huddinge and Solna.

- We solve it by maximizing the resources we have. We have hired substitutes and hourly employees, we hire staff and our managers work clinically with patients. Those who work need to be prepared to work overtime in order for the colleague to be free. But we are also reducing the number of seats at iva somewhat because it is usually a little calmer during the summer, says Björn Persson.
