Today, Monday, Legal Adviser to the Israeli government, Avichai Mandelblit, informed the Supreme Court that he will not interfere in the issue of evacuating Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem.

And last month, the court deferred its decision on a petition filed by seven families against eviction of their homes until it had heard the opinion of the government's legal advisor.

Haaretz newspaper reported that Mandelblit informed the Supreme Court today of his decision.

According to a source close to the legal advisor, the political echelon in Israel believes that "the state should not interfere."

She explained that Mandelblit sent a letter to the court in which he wrote that in light of the numerous legal procedures that had been conducted in relation to the disputed land over the years, and in view of the factual and legal provisions made in these proceedings, the Legal Counsel concluded that there was no justification to appear in court.

It was not immediately clear whether the decision would speed up the decision of the Supreme Court, Israel's highest judicial body, which did not specify a date for the start of deliberations on the eviction decisions.

Several weeks ago, the attorney general of the government submitted a request to the court to postpone the consideration of the case based on a political decision, following international pressures exerted on Israel to prevent the deportation process.

what does it mean?

Al-Jazeera Net correspondent Muhammad Wad said that the decision means that the ball is in the court of the Supreme Court and the Israeli judiciary, which passed a ruling in favor of the settlers in the first instance courts, and when it is now referred to the Supreme Court, there are no developments in order to invalidate the decision or overturn it in favor of the Palestinian families, which are 4 threatened families. The immediate evacuation of the 28 families.

It is likely that the Supreme Court will meet soon to reject the petition of the Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, especially since there was a previous decision to evacuate 28 families, which has been in place for more than 10 years, and this is done gradually, "and now on the agenda is the evacuation of 4 Palestinian families and the replacement of settlers."

The reporter continues that the attorney general's decision means that he wants to exempt "official Israel" from any judicial responsibility if the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood file is referred to the International Court.

It also constitutes a lifeline for the Israeli government from any diplomatic, international and American pressures, to present the file as a conflict between a group of settlers and a group of Palestinians, and that the decision was made after exhausting the judicial track in accordance with the democratic procedures adopted in Israel.

square one

For his part, Al-Jazeera correspondent stated that Mandelblit's decision will return the case of Sheikh Jarrah to square one, as a dispute over real estate between settlers and Palestinian homeowners, and any constitutional or political dimension will be dropped from it.

For his part, lawyer Sami Irsheed - who advocates for Palestinian real estate owners - said that he will conduct a study of Mandelblit's response, and respond to it to the court, stressing at the same time that the political dimension of the case and other dimensions related to its constitutional and legal aspects cannot be dropped.

The families resorted to the Supreme Court after the Magistrate's Court of First Instance and the Central Court issued decisions to evict them from their homes in favor of Jewish settlers.

The families resided in these homes as part of 28 refugee families in 1956 under an agreement between the Jordanian government and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

And Israeli settler groups are demanding the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes on the grounds that they reside on land that was owned by Jews before 1948, which the Palestinians deny.

The families have been locked in a struggle with settler groups in Israeli courts since the 1990s.

The decisions to evacuate 7 families from their homes in the neighborhood sparked confrontations between Palestinians and Israelis.
